Book Reviews

Reading is a hobby of mine that I've had for awhile, and it's one of my favourite ways to spend a free afternoon! I have an unfortunate pattern of forgetting 90% of what I read the day after finishing a book, so I hope these reviews will help lock them in my memory a bit better. I'll try to keep the reviews somewhat spoiler free, but I might not be too successful (you have been warned!!) You can navigate to the different reviews with links below or scroll through them one by one.

What the Woods Took by Courtney Gould

Reading Duration: 1 day (should've paced myself haha)

Thoughts: I picked this book up not knowing anything about it, and it did not disappoint! The suspense builds up perfectly and I ended up finishing it in an evening. Especially near the end, this book turns into the type that you're just itching to learn what happens next.

The story revolves around teenagers who have been enrolled in a wildnerness therapy program, with a supernatural twist. From the first chapter, you`re plunged into the mind of Devin Green, the protagonist, and the story quickly establishes her character and tidbits of her backstory as she is taken from her foster parents. I felt like the characters were an especially strong aspect of this book, and the author`s ability to make characters that felt authentic really drove the story forwards and made me root for the protagonist. All the characters felt really nicely developed, and I could tell there was thought put into their past and what those experiences turned them into. I especially loved how Devin and Sheridan's relationship grew and evolved through the book.

There are a number of plot twists in this book, too, which I felt were well-executed. After I finished this book, I decided to read some more books by the author!

A Treacher of Swans by A.B. Poranek

Reading Duration: i think a week? (writing this review a month after reading it so idk)

Thoughts: I found this book enjoyable and entertaining, and it reminded of the book Little Thieves by Margaret Owen, especially due to the main character (whose name I can't seem to remember??). Unfortunately, I don't seem to remember many details from this book other than the fact that I enjoyed it, and I found the cover very alluring and intriguing. Perhaps I`ll re-read it one day and add more this reivew. I would definitely recommend this book to other people, but I wouldn't be able to say why.

Tilly and the Bookwanderers by Anna James (book 1 of the Pages & Co. series)

Reading Duration: i should really start tracking these things... was it a day? a month? who knows...

Thoughts: This book has a special place in my heart. I've re-read it a couple times at different points in my life, so it feels a bit like I've grown up with it. The book itself centers around Tilly, a schoolgirl who has the ability to "bookwander", or travel into stories. The book follows her as she discovers more about her past and her parents. The way this book is written is very cozy and comforting, and though its target audience is elementary-school children, I feel that people of any age would enjoy it!
